Shine a Light in the Darkness!

Hello, and welcome to one and all! We have a house full of fic for you today, so without further ado, we hand you over to the delightful Drotuno who is sharing her love for JenRar’s new fic…

Anyone that knows me, knows I love me some vamps. LOVE them. If you read my stuff, then you also know that JenRar (Jenny) and I are like peas and carrots. She’s been my beta since I wrote Nature of Love, and I haven’t looked back. She’s the sister/friend/other half that I never knew existed. And you couldn’t pry her out of my cold, dead hands. 😉

When you give me Jenny writing vamps, then I’m in complete bliss. If you haven’t checked out her AU fic Full Circle, you should. It’s a completely different take on New Moon. And I loved that Edward so much…until A Light in the Darkness.

Jenny and I pass plots and ideas back and forth like trading baseball cards, but when she came to me with this one, I begged, pleaded, and blackmailed for her to write it. It starts out an emotional and sensitive subject, and it wasn’t easy to take on, but the story is stunning. I have the benefit of pre-reading, and I really hope that you take a chance on her story because I’m in awe of it. She’d picked it up and put it down several times the last few months, but most recently, she’d somehow kicked it into overdrive.

This Edward is canon and so beautiful and strong, but his salvation is born in the ashes of a young girl’s tragedy. The story starts out on one of the most tragic days in U.S. history – September 11, 2001 – in Manhattan. A confused, young Bella, trapped in the rubble of one of the World Trade Center towers, awakens to find she’s not alone in the darkness. A beautiful boy – or is he an angel? – is there to hold her hand, keep her safe until she can be found.

What Edward finds inside that collapsed building was way more than he expected, and once he realizes it, he has choices to make for not only the fragile human trapped…but for himself.

I can’t love this fic more. Honestly. Go give it a read. You won’t be disappointed.

A Light in the Darkness: On one of history’s darkest days, Edward finds his other half. Bella wakes to find that her guardian angel may just be a figment of her imagination. A journey of two lost souls as they find the light when darkness surrounds them. (WIP)

Reading, writing and editing Twilight fanfiction is not only a pleasure for me, it’s also a privilege because of stories like True Confessions of a Coffee Girl and authors like Deebelle1.  When I joined Dee’s team as a beta, I had no idea how much fun the trip would be.

Coffee Girl is the tale of a regular, hard working girl making her way through college by working at a coffee shop.  Bella has dreams of being a song writer, and despite her soulful voice, she has no interest in being in the spotlight.  Being in Hollywood, she’s used to ignoring the celebrity status of the beautiful people who frequent her workplace.  But when Hollywood heartthrob Edward Cullen takes a special interest in her and her perfect au laits, something begins brewing that Bella can’t deny.

“I think Edward Cullen just told me he was going to marry me.” It was really so odd to say that out loud and I was so sure I heard him wrong that I started laughing. “That’s ridiculous, huh? The most desirable bachelor in Hollywood under the age of thirty saying he wants to marry the twenty-one year old coffee girl next door.” It still sounded absurd repeating it again, even in a different way. “Let’s get back to work; the rush should be starting soon.”

Bella’s not so easily swept off her feet though, being a simple girl who wants the simple things in life.  In fact, tension brews between the pair when it comes to expensive gifts and Bella making her own way.  Our favorite duo is able to overcome the obstacles, including overzealous family members, in this lighthearted story of true love.

The coffee theme percolates throughout the entire story, linking Eddie and his coffee girl from their first meeting until the end.  Dee also notes some “confessions” of her own, giving us insight into celebrities she met in her time as a barista and beyond, as well as reader encounters, adding even more flavor to the story.

Coffee Girl is the perfect blend of romance and humor with a sprinkle of drama to keep everything interesting.  Edward knows what he wants from the moment he tastes Bella’s perfect coffee, and he’s not afraid to put himself out there to get it.  What could be better than a self-assured, handsome Actorward going after his perfect girl?

Hmm … maybe seeing things through Edward’s eyes as he becomes a first-time dad.  Stay tuned for the sequel, True Confessions of a Hollywood Dad.

True Confessions of a Coffee GirlA perfect cafe au lait was all it took for Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor to fall in love with me…the coffee girl. (Complete)

To my extreme happiness, I got the privilege to read The Almost before Lola-Pops decided to post it. My first reading, as well as every one since, left me with the best sort of bellyache: anticipation, curiosity…butterflies.

We’re hooked from the very first line, (and I mean first). There’s no slow start, no gradual draw…but such is the case with all of Lola’s stories. There’s mystery, a flashback. Lola paints the scene so vividly you feel it in your gut.

The backstory in The Almost is heavy, and while nothing bad actually happens, it’s the possibility that something could have that lends a certain darkness to the story’s atmosphere. It complicates the relationships between each of the characters, often lurking in the background. This is the initial “almost”.

The second “almost” is all about Edward and Bella, and the current state of limbo they reside in. They are very close, friends for a long time, separated by a few years and who they are with regard to Bella’s brother, Emmett. The wanting between them is delicious.

I don’t want to give too much away, because everything is revealed in its own time, and there’s so much brilliance to be had. The plot, the writing, and the characterizations are so fresh and yet so Lola. I love this short story, love the way Bella feels, love the way Edward responds. It’s angsty, but not overly so.

And so, so worth the read.

Our 500th Facebook Friend was the lovely Irish Cullen.

We asked Irish Cullen for her top ten fics so that we could choose one to review, and she gave us quite a list – it was so hard to select one!

Finally we went for a story that was new to all of us. Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of Irish Cullen, today we bring you:

The Ripper is dark, edgy, and full of kink. It’s so kinky, I had to read some of it with my eyes closed. Seriously.

It is quite an original tale, beginning way back in 1666 and the heated flames of the Great Fire of London. The story weaves quickly through time to the present day and the sexy tones of a radio talk-show host, whose voice sings to our favourite vampire – and he just HAS to have her. In fact, he’ll go to extraordinary lengths to capture her attention.

The door opened from the reception area to the main corridor. I could smell her…taste her, my palate honing in on her, singling her out among the human stench that had invaded my every pore, every waking moment.

I closed my eyes as I sat in the holding room, my tongue instinctively finding its way out of my mouth and running over my lips as the muffled sounds of her leather soled shoes grew louder, quicker…more insistent.

My lungs filled with the very life of her, and as I took her in, I closed my eyes and smiled.

Fate had finally decided to come a-calling, and who was I to close the door on my destiny? On hers?

She was mine!

We asked Irish Cullen to tell us why this story made her top ten. These are the reasons she picked out:

~I love cocky Edward ~ he has Fangs ~the story is HOT!! I just love the good twist in the story – Bella not knowing why she is the way she is at first… ~ reading about Edward being the submissive one, for a while at least anyway…

The Ripper: Edward, a nomad vampire, alone for more than three centuries, comes upon his next prey in the form of talk back radio psychologist, Bella Swan. (Complete)

Love Shouldn’t Hurt Fandoms Against Domestic Violence

The FicSisters would like to show their support for this excellent Fandom Fundraiser. Here are some words from the organiser to explain why:

This cause is one that is near and dear to my heart! My sister and her children escaped from Domestic Violence, and stayed at a shelter for Battered Women and Children here in the US. So, this cause really hit home for me.

A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to join a group that was going to raise money through the fandom to help with causes similar to this; however, due to the lack of interest the cause was cancelled.

Not wanting to waste the story I had written for the cause, I posted it on my profile. Another author read the story and contacted me to help her write a story about how she had escaped her own Domestic Violence situation.

It was at that moment, I knew … no matter how many signed up to participate, no matter how many donated money … that one way or another we were going to do something to get the word out.

And, here we are. I’m proud to say we have raised $365 for the cause. The money helps shelters like the one my sister was in. They educate women on the danger of Domestic Violence, provide them a safe haven, get them on their feet, and help them to live their lives to the fullest.

To help with the cause, we are offering a compilation from several authors in the fandom. The donation minimum is $5.00, donations end on 2/28/2014. Time is running out to get your very own compilation. Check out featured stories here.

Everyone deserves the right to feel safe in their homes. Stay safe and see what you can give to Love Shouldn’t Hurt

ONE FOR THE ROADWe asked the delightful and talented author Carrie Elks, known to many of us as Chocaholic123, to share her inspiration behind her latest book release, Fix You.

I wanted to write a story that spanned both time and distance, and showed how a relationship between two people is not only influenced by their own choices, but also by the events of the outside world. We’ve seen so much change over the past two decades. The uptake in use of the internet, the increased use of cell (mobile!!) phones, and the subsequent predominance of social media in first world countries. Hopefully all these themes are woven through Fix You, as well as the impact of specific events such as 9/11 and the new Millennium. I also wanted to incorporate my love of music, particularly that of the last couple of decades, and that meant I knew what Hanna’s job would be from the start!

Knowing that I wanted the story to be ambitious in its span, I was aware it would need a hook that drew you in right away. That’s where the prologue came in. From the start we know that these two people (Hanna and Richard) have had a relationship that came crashing down, and we know that the relationship created a baby. What we don’t know is WHEN they had this relationship, and WHY it failed so spectacularly. Hopefully that’s what keeps people reading the story—wanting to know more about how we get to the confrontation between the two.

I’m not the first to do this. Shirley Conran did it spectacularly well in Lace in the early 1980s. The tagline “Which one of you bitches is my mother” has to go down as one of the best in fiction. It opens up so many questions that you have to read the book to answer—and boy, that was a ride and a half!

Fix You’s strapline is “Richard, we had a baby” and that brings up similar questions. Why had? When did this happen, and why the heck is she only telling him about it now? I wanted to take the reader on a journey right alongside the two of them to find out the answers, while they experienced all the changes that Richard and Hanna go through. Only the readers will be able to tell me if I accomplished this!

“Richard, we had a baby.” 31st December 1999. Seventeen-year-old Brit, Hanna Vincent, meets New Yorker, Richard Larsen; a Columbia student and step-son of scion Leon Maxwell. Divided by wealth, distance and a common language, an unconventional friendship grows between the two. From London to New York, from 1999 to 2012, Fix You follows the story of quirky, music-loving Hanna and handsome, driven Richard as they fall in love and are torn apart. Their tempestuous relationship leads to an explosive revelation that threatens to destroy them both. Emotional and touching, this is a story of second chances. Is their shattered love beyond repair? Fix You is a stand-alone novel.
