Welcome to our first post of 2015! May this year be a good one for you all.
We wouldn’t be The International House of FanFic if we weren’t overflowing with fabulous fic. We have One Liner recs from our readers, fics to make you laugh and cry, the latest in WIPs, recently complete, and we open with a classic…
What is a young woman to do when confronted with the triple frustrations of an awkward young man, a waterfall and a flower in bloom (I shall call it a “flower” out of courtesy to the delicate sensibilities of the gentle reader, but you all know what I mean)? Well, if she is a modern woman with a go get ‘em attitude, she will take matters into her own hands. Quite literally if need be.
In the formative period of her life, the feisty Bella of this droll little tale is hardly one to take it lying down when life goes afoul. And go afoul her life does, rather often. Consider, for instance, an alarming episode only a few chapters into the tale “In Which Bella Dances the War Dance and Does Not Survive.” Insofar as “survival” is a subjective matter, no one with any sympathy for the plight of a teenager can help but to agree that the Bella who emerges from this particular ordeal might as well be dead to the world.
Thankfully, the heroine in question has her dear friends to help her through. If they are sometimes the source of Bella’s calamities, at least they are there for the aftermath. And that is really what matters isn’t it? That and having a handy supply of glue ready for reassembling a broken lawn gnome.
I might remark further on those antiquated chapter headings, lamenting that such things have gone out of fashion, while noting their intriguing placement within thoroughly modern prose. And how the image of a nymph brings to mind some Pre-Raphaelite paintings that would have once been dubbed obscene, symbolizing perhaps the early stirrings of a feminine desire the like of which are indeed dubbed obscene at first by this tale’s straight-laced Edward, the wary fellow upon whom our debauchee Bella has set her vulgar sights (in an inversion of staid Victorian gender norms). But who cares?
What matters most, I think, is Pastiche Pen’s deft handling of an endearing and horny young woman’s conquest of an attractive young man. Cliché becomes, dare I say it, art. The awkward machinations that initially betoken tragedy become comedy.
For this reason alone, The Nymph and the Waterfall begs reading and rereading. And I trust that I may rely on you to see to this matter forthwith.
Summary: Someone is spying on Bella at an “inconvenient” time. There’s a gnome and a crap ex-best friend. AH – Humor/Romance – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Complete
When myonlyheroin, who also happens to be a good friend of mine, approached me with this idea for a story she said she’d had for quite a while, my first response was something along the lines of “and you haven’t written this yet, why?” While I understood her reasons, since it does involve something very sensitive to many people (i.e. cancer), there was something so fabulous about this particular plotline that I had never seen and absolutely wanted to. And something that an even broader range of us could relate to, as it is set within a fanfiction fandom.
From the very first chapter she sent me to preread, I felt touched beyond words. Reading through the eyes of Edward, who is a fanfic addict, anxiously awaiting updates to stories, and in particular, by his favorite author, browneyedgirl. I, as well as many others I’ve seen, felt very connected to Edward because of that. Since I know I definitely have those authors that as soon as that update hits my inbox, I don’t care where I am. I’m dropping everything, whenever possible, for their words.
The fact that Edward represents a predominantly silent section of many fandoms, to the point that people believe they do not exist at all, was another refreshing change of pace with this story. A professional male in his thirties, indulging in the “guilty pleasure” of fanfiction. I loved the way she acknowledged these men in a very positive light; that regardless of what form of reading you enjoy, be it classics, young adult, erotica, or fan fiction, there is no shame in it, and it is not exclusive to only one gender.
Also what really got to me in the way I could relate to Edward, regardless of his age, was the way he came into the fandom itself. There are so many aspects to it that everyone can say “yup” and nod their head, because his story is our story in one way or another.
Most of all, I am very moved and thoroughly touched by the bond forged between Edward and Bella as friends, through the wonder that is a fandom. And while in this story, it’s the Harry Potter fandom, the friendship they formed is something I have seen all over the Twilight fandom as well, and experienced several times over myself. I have also seeing the wonderful banding together of the members of our fandom in times of need and tragedy, as well as the comfort even one member can give another. And this is beautifully exemplified in Edward’s reaction and genuine distress over one author’s note from his favorite fanfic author.
This story, She Gave Me Words, I Gave My Heart, has just about a little something for everyone. Obviously, a very relatable character in the voice of Edward in this, since he is many of us. The sweetness of a genuine friendship and affection from through a mutual adoration of something. Smiles, laughs, heartache, and tears. Not to mention that just in the first few chapters alone, this Edward is just about the sweetest guy I have read in a very long time, but not so sugary sweet that he feels unrealistic.
Summary: I found her in fic. I joined her in fandom. I learned from her and about her through the words she gave, but I’d be damned if I let her slip through my fingers in real life. Angst/Romance – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – WIP
Then send us a One Liner via the submission form!
Angie125: I just read Ethan Church, by Dryler, for the first time. I would recommend this one to anyone looking for a Vamp fic with a difference. Very well written!
Summary: When Bella accepts an offer to write the biography of a severely reclusive author, the old, dying man she’s presented with and the young, too perfect man she meets while there convince her she’s missing some very important parts of the story. AU – Mystery/Romance – Bella & Edward – Complete
Christa Sixtfourc : Looking for a quick dose of witty banter, sexy times and an Edward that is on Chief Swan’s hit list? Then you’re in luck! Drop everything and read, Keep the Tofurkey, Bring on the Beer by MrsSpaceCowboy. You’ll be laughing into your eggnog!
Summary: Bella Swan wants an escort for Thanksgiving weekend. Edward Cullen wants a second chance. Charlie wants to know where Renee hid the key to his gun safe. Humor/Romance – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Extended O/S
TwilightHipster29: I just discovered a new story, Dark Awakenings, by DeathToBeReborn. Her new story of love and redemption, starts off with a pained Edward (my favorite)! I, for one, miss the fast, strong Edward we all came to know and love. This story has all of that and more. Can’t wait to see where it goes!
Summary: Crumbled and shattered. It’s the only way to describe Edward Cullen after four years of a broken heart. When he sets out to search for new meaning in his life, it’s true love that ends up finding him. Angst/Romance – Rated: M – Edward, Carlisle, Jacob, Esme – WIP
*FicSister Note ~ Let’s welcome and show some love to a new author.*
wannabeCullen: I would like to recommend a sci-fi story I loved – NOVA by cupcakeriot…it was a very good story.
Summary: The early 27th century – a young omnilinguist gypsy girl who creates visions with her li’lute, an alien bio-weapon struggling with his control, the Federation starship Nova, and how their lives intertwine. Romance/Sci Fi – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Complete

Sway by love notes from morgan o’mally is one fresh face to the FicSisters, and we’ve got to say, we’re intrigued by 30-year-old Edward Cullen, and his Miami, Florida based magazine The Cove…and his new hire…
I conjured a mental calendar of the week’s schedule, thumbing over Brendan’s number.
“Hey, just got into town. Almost to the restaurant. Your sister’s still a go?”
“Yeah, yeah she left like over an hour ago though. I’m actually here at the house. Mom’s babysitting.” I checked my watch. Shit, an hour ago…
“It was eight, right?”
He laughed. “Don’t worry, I filled her in on your travel time issues. She’s probably three margaritas in by now.”
“Well, this should be interesting, then.” We edged the curb in front of Gracias Padre.
“Nah, she’ll be good. She’s pretty excited about it. She seriously deserves a break. Thanks for doing this, Edward. I owe you one.”
I balanced my cell, paid the driver with a wide view of the outdoor dining.
“No problem. She’ll be doing me a favor, actually. None of my staff is quite equipped for a sports cover. You know?
“She’ll kill it.”
“I’m sure she will. Hey, I’ll get with you soon. We’ll hit the course or get a drink next week.” I smoothed my duffle strap across my chest and watched her through the landscape and lights.
The waiter refilled her glass, hung a minute too long. She shrugged dramatic, hands thrown in the air, a deep exasperated laugh. I was monumentally late. I weaved through tables, ducking below strands of wired globe lights.
“Bella?” I grinned, hand extended. “Edward Cullen.”
After this one meeting that made us smile, we know there’s a story to enjoy in Edward, his magazine, and his “complicated thirty year old heart and mind,” and with sports writer, Bella, and her 8-year-old son, Toby. This romance/friendship story has definitely caught our attention, and after just three posted chapters, we’ve been swayed to read more of love notes from morgan o’mally’s lovely words.
Summary: A story of two people. Paths cross, lives blend and they discover they like each other more everyday. A simple, possible love story where the palms line the shore. EPOV Romance/Friendship – Rated: M – WIP
I’m a real sucker for stories that take their inspiration from music. Music, like words, have the ability to make me feel things, so when a writer combines my two loves, it immediately catches my attention.
One day, thimbles and I were discussing the brilliance of Paul Kelly’s storytelling. He writes songs that put you right into the heart of Australia, whether it be making gravy before Christmas, standing at the top of the hill on Punt Road with the view of the ‘G and the Nylex clock before you, or being a voice for the struggles of indigenous Australians.
To Her Door is based on one of my favourite, favourite songs. Shell and I had discussed, at length, what a heartbreaking, yet hopeful fic it would make. Little did I know, Shell would deliver this tidy little package to me on my birthday (cue excited fangirly squealing on my behalf).
Paul Kelly’s lyrics set the scene for thimbles to expand the story:
They got married early, never had no money/ then when he got laid off they really hit the skids.
Edward and Bella were always destined to be together. They live in the same small town they grew up in, and when Edward is laid off from the mill, he turns to the bottle to get him through. Problem is that he’s bled their bank account dry, and there’s no other work to be had in their small town.
He took it pretty badly, she took both the kids
She said: “I’m not standing by, to watch you slowly die
So watch me walking, out the door”
Bella finally gets up the courage to do what she needs to do to save herself and her girls—she walks in search of a better life, giving Edward the chance to get his shit together so that they can hopefully get on with their lives.
thimbles captures the pain of Bella’s struggle perfectly. She evokes that same gut-wrenching feeling that you get when you listen to the song and play out the characters’ lives in your head. It’s so easy to lose yourself in Bella’s world: the strong, sharp smell of eucalyptus, the heat, and the strength she has to find in herself to finally put herself, and her girls, first.
While, at the time of writing this, the story is incomplete, I have absolute faith that Shell will deliver the best possible outcome for these characters. And you gotta admit, these lyrics give you hope, right?
He was shaking in his seat riding through the streets
In a silvertop to her door
Reading Shell’s words is always an honour, but this story of hers is now an absolute favourite of mine. I hope you love it as much as I do.
Summary: She said, I’m not standing by, to watch you slowly die / So watch me walking, out the door.” A story told in three parts. For the lovely MagTwi78. Drama/Romance – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – WIP
How to Forget starts out with a man being beaten and nearly killed in the woods, all the while listening to the screams of the woman he is with. Then, Shadow Masen goes on to tell an amazing story about a man who wakes up with no memory of who he is…or was. He is incredibly broken, both physically and mentally.
As the story progresses, we meet Bella, a dedicated physical therapist assigned to help Edward in his recovery; she helps him see that even if he never gets back to being who he was, he is loved for who he IS. His body is extremely damaged and his physical recovery is very hard on him. Along with that, the pressure of having no memory of who he is eats away at Edward’s psyche, because while he is falling in love with Bella, he is recovering enough bits and pieces of his memory to conclude he must not have been a “good” person.
This story shows us that while we may not like our past selves, the future is yet to be written, so as we move forward, we can repair any damage we may have done. We can strive to be better people than we once thought we were. It is frustrating at times, moving at others. There is drama and action and great, heartfelt emotion; through all the angst of this story, the underlying hope shines through.
I read this story as a WIP, and I was hooked. It was my drop everything fic, at the time. Through reviewing I became friends with Shadow Masen. She is a wonderful author, and she doesn’t give herself nearly enough credit. If you give this story a chance, I know you will love it just as much as I do.
Summary: Where do you go if you don’t know who you are, and what if you find you don’t want to remember? Edward finds himself in Forks under suspicious circumstances, can Bella help him discover who he truly is? Angst/Romance – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Complete
This story, A Merry Misunderstanding, is exactly what it says on the tin…well, it is for us, the readers. To be precise, it’s more than merry – it’s laugh-out-loud funny! Although, it’s definitely a misnomer as far as this hapless Awkward is concerned. Edward is the CFO of Esme Esoteric, the highly successful lingerie business he runs with his mother and sister. Yes, you read that right; a most unusual line of merchandise for a (Cullen) family business, for sure.
He deals with figures of the numerical kind with ease and aplomb; it’s the figures displayed by the models that turn him into a nervous wreck… and pave the way for the said merry misunderstanding.
You’ll know exactly what we mean when you read Edward’s reaction to swaths of exposed skin…
Swallowing so hard I could feel my silk tie moving along with my Adam’s apple, I stared into the face of danger. There were four of them, all blond and all over six-feet-tall in their ludicrously high-heels. That was my advantage, wingtips could usually outrun pumps or whatever they were calling women’s shoes these days. I noticed the tiny flare of a surgically-modified nostril as ice blue eyes locked on mine. It was like being caught in a sniper’s scope.
For a moment I allowed myself to be intimidated by the stares and lowered my gaze, but that only made it worse. I could feel the papers in my hand getting soggy from my sweaty hands as I caught sight of silk and lace encased breasts, bare midriffs of perfectly toned muscles, and (dear-God!) bejeweled g-strings.
They were just on the other side of my office door. Perhaps if I made a mad dash, they would be too busy posing to stop me before I could get inside and lock myself in safety.
Isn’t he adorable? He’d be welcome to take refuge inside the FicSister office anytime. We’re kind like that. 😉
Unfortunately, for the confused but desperate new hire Bella, there’s nothing ‘merry’ in how she understands a seemingly bizarre request from Edward, as he attempts to take control of the situation. We won’t spoil your fun by giving away any of the details, but suffice to say, like in any good rom-com, hilarity ensues, romance blooms, and we bask in the feel-good factor as the credits roll.
Complete at seven chapters, lovepotionsbrewer bring us a lovely, light, and merry read. Enjoy!
Summary: Edward is wishing for a little peace in the office, but there are two problems. First, models in lingerie have invaded his safe zone. Second, his sister is convinced he needs to hire an assistant. Then he makes one tiny mistake. Maybe if he pretends to be something he’s most definitely not he can still get his job done. EPOV – AH – Awkward – A Christmas gift for Sunflower Fran. Humor/Romance – Rated: M – Edward & Bella – Complete
Hot off the press comes The Fall, from the enchanting Australian author, MissWinkles. In the past she has treated us to some delightful, humourous stories, but with just over 1,000 captivating words posted to The Fall, we already have the feeling we are in for a goodie of a different nature.
It’s too simple to say the story opens from the view of a man watching a woman in a strip-club – even though it does – as there’s obviously unspoken layers lying hidden from the reader. The dramatic chapter shares glimpses of those two characters who immediately arouse curiosity…and leave us wanting more. Gah! Even the summary is intriguing!
Summary: She’s got a bulletproof heart but he’s got a hollow point smile. He’s a gathering storm. A spark in the darkness. A bruised heart just waiting to happen. At rock bottom, Bella Swan has nowhere to fall but everything to lose. Drama/Romance – Edward & Bella – Rated: M – WIP
