Life of Fic

Welcome one and all! We can’t wait to share our love for the written word today and are excited to bring you a mixture of WIPs, complete fics, and a fabulous new book.

Earlier this week, two of the FicSisters were in Berlin for the film festival so it’s a perfect time to shine the spotlight on Actorward…

You hear it all the time. In interviews, press grabs, lines thrown away and clipped from responses to half assed questions asked daily of actors all over the world. “He’s always in character.” “She slips into the role so completely.” “This role was made for him/her.”

People so often blur the lines between actor and character and I started to think what it might be like to be the actor who can’t work that out for himself.

A plot about a guy who could easily slip into roles but couldn’t slip back out again seemed to be something that I could use my strange sense of humour to communicate. Designing a plot around that proved harder when I took into consideration the mental instability around not being able to switch. James Goodall, Rupert Sizemore and Edward Cullen as he is now were born then.

Enter Emmett McCarty – bodyguard, protector and brother who tries his best to get Edward to remember who exactly he is.

Bella Swan, daughter of Charlie Swan and Edward Cullen’s previous bodyguard, comes calling one day demanding answers that nobody seems to have.

Her re-emergence in Edward’s life sets off a chain of events that threatens to either bring and keep the real Edward Cullen back to life or bury him forever in his alternate realities.

“Living with Edward Cullen, when he’s Edward Cullen, is a simple and easy thing. He’s very neat, very clean and rather shy and unassuming. In short, for an actor, he’s remarkably nice.

Living with him when he believes he’s someone else is stressful. It’s also nearly impossible to ensure his safety.”- Emmett McCarty.

The plot of Shadow Mission may be mine, but I asked Maxigrumpling to put my pages of notes into a credible order because I only finger paint, my wife turns the words into art. Without her it would still just be a notebook of dot points and ideas – and still incomplete.

In its simplest form this story, I hope, says this: You can have money, fame and an endless supply of ego strokers and at the end of the day, when everything is tallied up, you might still have nothing at all if there is nobody for you to love.

Mr Maxigrumpling

Summary: Actor Edward Cullen is rich, famous & sexy. There’s just one fly in the ointment. He can’t keep the other personalities in his head straight. Emmett, his bodyguard, needs help sorting his charge out. Enter his ‘crew’, Alice the hacker, Jasper his second, Rose the shrink…and Bella, the girl whose father gave his life to protect Edward’s. If only he remembered why. Angst/Romance – Rated: M – Edward & Bella – WIP

In one of his weakest and loneliest moments, Hollywood heart-throb Edward Cullen stumbles across a bright yellow fan letter that immediately seems to bring color and warmth into his otherwise gray and monotonous life. Reading it wakes him up and makes him see what a dangerous path he’s on, but calling the included number, is the best thing he’s ever done.

A sweet timid voice filled Edward’s eardrum as Isabella Swan greeted her unknown caller. “Hello?”

Edward cleared his throat awkwardly. “Um, hello. Is this Isabella Swan?”

“Yes it is she. Who is this?” she asked with a hint of annoyance in her voice. Bella had rushed to answer the phone for what she was beginning to suspect was a telemarketer. The caller ID showed the caller’s number was blocked.

“This is Edward Cullen. Am I calling you at a bad time?”

Edward’s life is described very believably, and it couldn’t be more different from Bella’s. She’s a student whose life is rooted in Texas where she cares for her family. Her normalcy and down-to-earth attitude are exactly what Edward needs to get some perspective and put his life back on track. But both of them seem to be getting much more than they bargained for when their friendship slowly begins to change into something else. Will they find a way to overcome the distance as well as Bella’s reluctance to enter the world of celebrities and fakeness? I can’t wait to find out.

BoysNBooksRBetter has created wonderful characters and takes us on a journey where we witness strangers becoming close friends, share their biggest secrets, and eventually, depend on each other. Feelings of jealousy and becoming aware of a developing love are portrayed very sensitively and in a captivating way like I’ve rarely read them. Phone calls turn into video chats and hopefully a first personal meeting in the near future.

Letter From the Heartland is ten chapters in and updates every other week. I’m sure you won’t regret giving it a try. I bet Edward and Bella will very quickly worm their way into your hearts.

Summary: Edward is a movie star struggling with his fame. Bella is a Midwestern girl and busy college student. The two strike up an unlikely friendship after E receives a fan letter from B that forces him to confront his Hollywood demons. The friendship gets complicated when phone calls are no longer enough for the actor and romantic feelings start to become real. Friendship/Romance – Rated: M – Edward & Bella WIP

This FicSister loves this delightful story, Milk Money by Nocturnal Emissions. Everything about it invites me in. :)

Actorward, Daddyward, and Sweetward are successfully rolled into one in this engaging personification of our beloved Edward. He’s been left holding the baby – literally! His baby-momma, Tayna, a self-centred and shallow model, is more concerned with shaping her figure for an appearance at the Oscars than with caring for her child. Little Charlie is failing to thrive; his worried dad is willing to try anything to help his son. Thankfully, Edward’s sister, Esme, has an off-the-wall idea worth taking a chance on.

And then we have Bella. She is a young, hard-working single-mother struggling to earn enough money to further her education in order to provide a better future for her daughter. Fortuitously, Elizabeth, at nearly one, is being weaned, thereby leading to a supply of precious breast milk being stored in the freezer.

What happens next is more than a simple case of supply and demand. Yes, both milk and money change hands, but is there something beyond mere convenience for them? By Bella and Edward putting their children first, will they find what they are lacking in their own lives? I have a feeling they will. :)

Milk Money is told in drabblish format with daily updates.

Summary: Edward Cullen is a famous movie star. His son is a week old and can’t seem to keep any formula down. The mother of the child, Tanya takes off leaving Edward alone with their newborn. After trying nearly every formula on the market, Esme, Edward’s sister suggests breast milk. It seems like a long shot, but will Bella answer the ad and save the day? Romance ~ Rated: M ~ WIP

Sometimes a story touches the reader’s heart, feels so real that it causes actual heart-wrenching tears. The upside is celebrating the happy moments, too. More tears for different reasons! Add in the feelings evoked when the story IS based on the real-life experiences of the author…well, the emotions are off the scale!

That’s exactly what happened when this FicSister discovered Your Life Can Change in a Moment hidden amongst other gems when shamelessly fic-diving other readers’ favorites lists.

coloradoperson decided to write what she knew. She knew cancer. But let me say it now – In fact, I want to shout it LOUD – this story is uplifting, heartwarming, inspirational and a testament to strong, courageous, beautiful women, and the sisterhood that we so often forget. This story is love, compassion, kindness and is real. It’s also laced with affection and humor.

If you’re in any doubt about whether or not this story is for you, here’s the A/N:

I love fanfic, and I’ve always wanted to write a story. They say you should write about what you know in your first story, and what I know is breast cancer. Maybe breast cancer is too real, but hope, courage and love, especially love, are also real, and that’s really what this story is all about. This is my breast cancer journey and the journeys of the people I love – my mom, my sister and my friends, Bev and Barb – seen through the eyes of Bella and Edward.

It is dedicated to all of those who have been touched by cancer and their incredible courage, strength and spirit.

It’s easy to fall in love with the whole cast, especially Bella and Edward…and if there was an award for best supporting character, Bella’s friend Angela would be nominated.

However, this is the point to note -just in case you hadn’t guessed- tissues will be required even when you’re smiling. But, if you’re looking for a life-affirming story of love, then this is for you. Take the risk. Honor our sisters on their journey and count your blessings. You won’t regret it.

Summary ~ Bella didn’t like surprises. Her life was safe, predictable and she knew what to expect until fate brought her breast cancer and everything changed. This is not a tragedy; it’s a story about love and hope..because that’s what life is all about. Drama/Romance – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Complete

Want everyone to know your current or most-loved fic ever?

Then give us a One Liner via the submission form or by PM on Facebook.

eirlysjones ~ Best ever fic to cheer you up: The Red Eye, by badjujube. It’s properly hilarious! Sardonic but sweet as well, it shows all the characters’ good sides, as they quip and banter.

Summary: It’s important for any private investigator to maintain a good relationship with local law enforcement and it’s representatives. Therefore, I am always cooperative and polite with Chief Swan. Also, I try not to drink his daughter Bella’s blood. Humor – Rated: M – Edward & Bella – Complete.

RobbieElise ~ I have two for you today:  Goodbye Peter Pan, by Bled Dry, is new, amazing, and so real (well, as real as mythical characters can be).  The conflict is emotionally brutal, and the “pull” insistent.  Angst, but so worth the rough ride.

Summary: Prompted by a feeling, Alice leads the Cullens back to Forks, but ten years is a long time in a brief human life. Edward’s wish for Bella to have a nice human life seems to have been fulfilled. Bella believes that once she loved a remarkable boy, but in the end he didn’t love her. Can Edward convince her she is wrong? Romance/Angst – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Complete

The Deluded by FantasyMother… How have I not heard of this completely unique and wonderful story yet?  To quote myself (while reading it through the night, because trust me, you will not put it aside until done), wow. I know, wow, but oh my, WOW!!!  I’ve not read ANYTHING like this! It is so different, so powerful, Edward is, just, oh. Read it. Now.

Summary: Edward lowered his eyes to his lap, uncomfortable with my question. He grabbed a grape off the table, popped it in his mouth and chewed. I saw him blush-I could almost hear his heartbeat. “Bella, I live in the woods because I’m a vampire.” Romance/Mystery – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Complete

And if FM is reading this, more please!  (You also, Bled Dry, more!!)  These are gold Vampwards, my dears, GOLD!

Many thanks to eirlysjones and RobbieElise for sharing so enthusiastically with us today. :)

The-Raven copy

I have a confession. I’ve never read anything by Sylvain Reynard before. Like most avid readers out there, I know of Gabriel’s Inferno (and the two following books) and of course I’ve heard the rumours of who Sylvain may be, but for some reason I’ve never had the pleasure of reading his words before.

I’m glad to say that is a thing of the past. Because in the last week I’ve read two of his books from start to end, and happily devoured every sentence. Though this review is concentrating on his latest release – The Raven – I’d encourage you to read the prequel novella The Prince first, as this builds up the history and suspense. However, these books also stand alone in their own right.

The Raven tells the story of Raven Wood, an American girl working in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. From the start we learn that Raven loves her work, loves Italy, and yet she seems to be alone, in the deepest sense of the word. Physically impaired, she has to walk with the aid of a stick, a fact that will become more significant as the story unfolds.

One night, when coming to the aid of a homeless man, Raven suffers an attack from a group of men. Blacking out, she doesn’t realise she’s rescued by a shadowy figure, and when she awakes she is alone in her apartment. But that isn’t the end of it; she can’t remember anything about the attack, and the only reason she realises anything is wrong is because when she arrives at work nobody recognises her. That, and the fact she no longer needs her walking stick.

In short, she’s been transformed overnight. Whatever has happened, it has led to the repair of a previously irreparable leg injury, and to her losing a large amount of weight and somehow becoming as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.

William York–the ‘Prince’ of the story, is the shadowy figure that came to her aid that night. Despite his ancient age (at first we only know he is paranormal, although later in the book it’s confirmed he is a vampire), the Prince becomes enamoured of Raven, feeling protective of her and going as far as to give her a talisman to ward off others of his kind. We also learn that he has managed to remain the ‘Prince’ of Florence for 700 years through a combination of cunning and statesmanship.

What follows is part paranormal suspense and part paranormal romance, and it’s a combination that thrilled me to the core. It was fast paced yet descriptive, exciting yet beautiful, and I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the page. The Raven has something for everyone–not only romance and action but also more than a passing nod to those who love history and the Renaissance period in particular. We learn more of Dante and Botticelli, as well as Machiavelli (who turns out to be a vampire himself, still part of the Prince’s coven), who may or may not have based his own political treatise ‘The Prince’ on William York.

As well as being well-written and perfectly paced, the world-building in The Raven is elegantly done. Secrets are revealed along the way by William and his supporters, as we learn that the vampire world is made up by a series of independently-ruled cities, some of which are friendlier than others.

I’d like to tell you more, but this is one of those stories you need to experience for yourself. Suffice to say that having read The Raven and The Prince in one week, I’m now going to immerse myself in the world of Professor Emerson and Julia, and make up for some lost time!

Greed is good.

As a matter of fact, Greed is great, especially now that Robsmyyummy Cabanaboy has expanded the sinful one-shot she wrote for the SALIGIA compilation by The Sinners.

Normally when I read Yum’s fics, I get all swoony from the sweetness and face wavy from the sizzle. But when I pre-read the initial one-shot of Greed, my jaw dropped because this was like nothing I’d ever read before.

Greed is the twisted tale of Isabella, a high-priced escort whose clientele are some of the wealthiest and most influential men in the country, including an oil tycoon, his philandering son, and a crooked senator. Lewd acts with these men certainly prove to be lucrative, but it’s not the money she’s after…it’s the power. And once she has a taste of it, nothing (or no one) will stop her from getting what she wants.

Enter Edward, a reclusive entrepreneur who lives his life in the shadows. He’s an agoraphobic who Isabella befriends in college and through the years becomes her closest confidant and most ardent admirer. She is his light, but after a night of passion, he discovers her true dark side.

“Last night meant nothing.”

The life in his eyes vanished, his shoulders slumped forward. Isabella froze after hearing the words that hung in the air, and her heart clenched for probably the first time in her life. She didn’t mean that being together with him meant nothing. She meant to say that it didn’t change anything . . . it couldn’t.

Shortly after this interaction, the shaky house of cards Isabella built on secrets and lies comes crashing down around her and all parties involved. Karma’s a bitch – but I admit I felt a sick satisfaction in seeing this cast of characters reaping what they sowed.

There’s something about this Isabella and Edward though… No matter how flawed they were, or despicable their actions, I still find myself rooting for them and hopeful for more of their story. And dare I say…their redemption.

Readers were greedy for more as well, needing to know where Isabella and Edward go from there and what happens after it all falls apart. Thankfully, Yum has a lot more in store for these two and will update every Sunday and Wednesday. So go ahead and indulge in this delicious tale of sin – get your Greed on.

Summary: Greed: noun \grēd\ (Latin – Avaritia) 1 : a selfish desire to have more of something. Contribution to the seven deadly sins SALIGIA compilation from The Sinners posted on Fat Tuesday 2014. Drama – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Hermitward – Complete

When asked to share some thoughts on my favorite story from the ones I’d written, one jumped out at me the most. It wasn’t my very first fic (that holds another place in my heart for totally different reasons) but a fic I’d written about two years after I’d joined the fandom. Teacher of the Year was it. I wrote about what I knew, and what I’d want to read (I’m a teacher and I love banter). It was the 1st time fic writers I’d fangirled over were actually reading and reviewing my little creation. Teacher Edward is still my favorite of all my Edwards (I have very close seconds, though) and it’s the fic where I felt I’d finally found my writing voice. Bella was me… well, the snark and her view of things were very much me, and it’s just the one fic that came very naturally to me.

The story follows Bella and her son, Garrett as they return to Bella’s hometown after a divorce. To celebrate her new-found freedom, her longtime friends take her out for a night on the town… well, a night at the one decent bar in their small town. There, she imbibes a bit too much and ends up dancing and making out with a complete stranger. Who cares right? She’s still young, and it’s not like she’s tied down any more and definitely not like she’ll cross paths with the mystery guy since she’s really not one for the bar scene anyway.

But, fate has a sense of humor. Bella drops Garrett off at his first day of school where who should be her son’s kindergarten teacher? Yup. You guessed it.

What follows is a (hopefully) heart-warming and funny journey for two people with light baggage who ultimately realize that things always happen for a reason, and sometimes in the most unlikely of ways.

Thanks for reading my silly little stories. It was written with love and humor in mind!

Summary: When Bella has a chance encounter with a sexy stranger, she never believes she’ll see him again. Fate however, has a sense of humor. Humor/Romance – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Complete

Huge thanks to the FicSisters for inviting me to talk a little bit about my most recently completed fic, What She Deserves.

The inspiration for this story came from several places. Most of all, I wanted to portray something that I hadn’t seen before in our fandom, and I hoped to portray it with as much honesty as possible.

No one is perfect. No one makes the right decisions all the time. This Edward and Bella are floundering at the beginning of the story. They have to struggle through a situation for which neither of them were prepared. But they also grow from it. My hope is that the readers will see how they mature throughout the story and how their situation and decisions shape them.

While there is quite a lot of angst in this one, I also tried to inject a bit of humor, a good dose of romance, and a lot of realism. I hope that, by the end, the reader feels it was worth going through the rocky parts to get to where the characters end up.

Here is an excerpt:

“I’d like to say it goes just like the movies when I see Bella again, the clouds parting and the two of us running into each other’s arms. But what actually happens is that I get tangled up in my seatbelt in my haste to get out of the car, and then I trip over the shoelace I didn’t realize was untied.

She looks like an angel, though, standing a few feet away in simple jeans and a long-sleeved purple shirt, giggling lightly. To see her smiling like that, dark eyes sparkling and cheeks stained pink…

She’s still so heartbreakingly beautiful.

I finally get a hold of myself and step right up to her with a soft smile. “Hey.”

It’s awkward for a second as our arms criss-cross, trying to figure out which way to hug, but when we do figure it out, it’s everything. Warmth and relief and love. Wrapping my arms all the way around her waist, I relish the chance to squeeze her against me. Bella buries her face in my chest and throws both arms around my neck, and when she sniffles, I realize I have tears on my face too.

“God, I missed you so much.”

She nods against me. “Me too.”

Burying my nose in her hair, I take a deep breath. A soft moan leaves my mouth at the familiar coconut scent, but she doesn’t seem to mind. Her arms tighten around me, and I don’t want to let her go. Ever.

“Are you hungry?”

She nods against me and sniffles again.

“Okay, I’m gonna get checked in, and then we’ll grab a bite. Sound good?”

Bella clears her throat and says, “Yeah,” but she doesn’t let go of me.

And I’m not about to make her.”

This story is about facing tough decisions, growing up, being selfless and sometimes selfish. I shed quite a few tears while writing this, but I’m glad to have had the experience. It’s hard to see it come to an end, but I’m proud of how it turned out.

Thank you to all who gave this story a shot and to those who stuck with me and saw it through to the end. It means the world to me.

Summary: She deserves better than what I can give her. She deserves everything. Romance/Angst – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Complete

We hope you enjoyed dipping in to the Life of Fic as much as we did putting these stories together. As always, it’s the generosity of spirit shown in this fandom that makes it all possible. Thanks to Shahula and Twilly for so kindly making banners. Our grateful thanks also go to Mr Maxigrumpling, DH78, GeekChic12, LayAtHomeMom, Payton79, and our very own Carrie Elks, for so beautifully sharing their words.
