Hello Readers! Welcome to another fun-filled post. This week we have fairytales, sagas, vampires, angels and actors…what a mix! We start off with shouldbecleaning‘s wonderful new story…enjoy!
Shouldbecleaning is rapidly becoming one of our favourite authors here at The International House of FanFic. Reading her stories is like meeting up with one of your greatest friends for tea and a chat – and we can assure you, dear readers, that her newest story, More Than Salt, is this FicSister’s current ‘drop everything and read’ WIP!
More Than Salt is the story of Princess Isabella, banished from her Kingdom because her father is stupid. Can’t put it any more plainly than that! Princess Isabella embarks on an adventure that leads her to King Carlisle’s realm. We are sure that shouldbecleaning will have some wonderful things in store for our intrepid Princess and we will allow you to discover them for yourself as you join her in this exciting journey.
From chapter one…
Isabella knew there was no appealing her father’s decision. As King and father his word was law. There was no recourse for her but time. She had hurt his pride in front of others. She would have to do what he said and leave as quickly as possible.
Isabella gathered a few items that meant something to her, a couple pieces of clothing and her small purse of coins. She kissed and thanked her ladies maid and went to the kitchen to say goodbye to the family cook and the helpers. They pressed a bag of bread and hard cheese into her hands and wished her well. Isabella was the most pragmatic of all King Charles’ daughters and was well loved by the castle staff. She sighed and made her way out of the castle that had been her only home. She did not look back nor did she cry. She waited until after nightfall and many miles away before she broke into tears.
PS: You can’t miss shouldbecleaning’s AN’s – they never cease to make us giggle!
Summary: Princess Isabella must find a way to teach her father, King Charles, a lesson. Oh, and win the heart of a Prince at the same time. A fairy tale. Fantasy/Romance – Rated M – Bella/ Edward – WIP
This FicSister has long pondered why she loves domineering, controlling Edwards. In real life, I am 99.99% certain if my DH acted like some of my most favourite Edwards, I would probably clobber him – so I have decided not to linger on the ‘whys’ too much and just enjoy! If you are like me and enjoy an Edward who ‘wears the pants’ – you are going to love this little under-appreciated gem by VioAlexandru.
Was I so easily surrendering? Was I so weak, defeated so soon, already willing to give him up? Maybe I should fight instead, fight for him with this beautiful yet faceless woman with everything I had.
But even if I did that, Edward would still not want me. It was as simple as that, yet inexorable nevertheless. “Too proud to beg/ Too dumb to steal”. Yeah, that would definitely be me. So why impose myself on him?
We don’t get a glimpse into Edward’s mind until quite late in the story, but suffice to say, it is an interesting place to be – he is certainly a ‘take no prisoners’ kinda guy! But what I loved most about this story is that there is a deep, deep love between these two and using that old chess adage, even though the king might be the most highly ranked piece on the board, it really is the queen who holds the power. Enjoy, dear readers!
Summary: Well, they’re married. So why isn’t it everything wonderful? All human, OOC, mature themes. Romance – Rated M – Edward, Bella – Complete
FicSister Note: It wasn’t until long after I had finished this story that I found out that the author doesn’t speak English natively. She’s amazing!
I want to rec a story by an author I’m sure you all know very well indeed – ElusiveTwilight, author of, amongst others, Incubus Anomaly, The Rain Season and All the Wild Horses. This is one of her more overlooked, but no less beautifully written stories, Immortal Beloved.
This is another AU story, but before you panic, it’s a world away from Incubus Anomaly. Edward is much older, in vampire terms, than our canon hero, and meets Bella in early nineteenth century Vienna. They are, of course, instantly smitten, but the mores of the day demand that they cannot publicise their affair.
I could not stand it anymore. I had to have her.
Slowly, I stalked forward. The silence seemed loud in my ears, my throat burned, and my instincts took over. Her smell filled my nostrils, and I listened to the moist sound of her blood, moving idly through her veins. Her breathing was still soft, and her eyes moved behind her eyelids as she dreamed.
Her pulse thudded in my ears, and my mouth watered with venom. I tried to swallow it back, and my throat protested, wanting blood.
As gently as I could, I opened her skin to me, and it was as if planets shifted, the earth moved, and everything clicked into place.
I am a fiend. A nightmare, a murderer, a coveter. I am a soulless demon.
And now, I planned on adding maidenhead stealer to this list of vulgarities.
Bella intuitively knows there is something different about Edward, but their passion for one another cannot be supressed and they inevitably become lovers. Unfortunately, dark forces conspire to quickly separate them.
Thus Bella begins the long journey across the world and across the centuries to be reunited with her one true love, her mate. Along the way, she gains some unlikely allies, and together they pursue their separate goals – Bella to find Edward and her friends to destroy a common enemy.
The story itself was inspired by the letters written by Beethoven to his anonymous lover – his Immortal Beloved – and letters which Edward writes to Bella are direct quotes from Beethoven. I am sure you will marvel, as I did, at how perfectly they fit the story of star-crossed vampire lovers.
As ever with ElusiveTwilight, both the writing and structure of this story are absolutely pitch-perfect, with haunting and lyrical prose, and an exciting and well thought out plot, which captivates and keeps you reading.
Summary: ‘My thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved, waiting to learn whether or not fate will hear us. I can live only wholly with you or not at all.’ Newborn vampire Bella stumbles through the centuries to unlock what has happened to Edward. Romance/Drama – Rated: M – Edward & Bella – Complete
There’s very little this FicSister loves more than a good Actorward story. And this one here, Belward (yes, you can snicker at the title) by footprints358, is a very good one.
Edward’s life is focused on work, work, and more work. He declares he doesn’t have a partner, of either sex, because he hasn’t time, yet Edward is anything but a dull boy. He’s so lovely and has a wicked sense of humour. It’s impressive how he handles the press (read vultures) with aplomb and grace, and how skillfully he thwarts the advances of women who want a piece of him – you can guess which piece they’d prefer. Having said all that, please don’t think me shallow when I confess one of Edward’s most appealing features is the sex hair…
Rachel tugged Edward’s wrist and held it against his chest. “Do. Not. Touch. Your. Hair! I just spent the better part of an hour trying to fix that god awful mess on your head. If I didn’t know any better, I would tell you that you needed to go to therapy for sex addiction because from the looks of your hair it looks like you’re constantly getting fuckawesome action. But I know you’re a monk, so there’s nothing rational that explains the hair.”
Oh, Rachel, Rachel, we don’t need there to be anything rational about the hair. Sigh!
Bella is another immediately interesting, strong, intelligent character with a fabulous attitude to life. Like Edward, she loves what she does for a living and is highly successful.
They each have a remarkable, offbeat – that’s being polite – but loving family. I don’t know which brand of crazy I like more as the Cullens and the extended Swan family are two of a kind. Oh…I’ve just had a thought: if this fic ends in a typical HEA for Edward and Bella, these cIans are sure to get together at some stage. Shenanigans will surely ensue! It’s exciting that while undoubtedly some *cough Renee* are a little off-the-wall, they feel like real people…family with whom to identify.
Edward and Bella have something else in common, too: both have fabulous dynamics and banter with their trusted friends. In my book, that says a lot about a person. There’s another character who tickles my fancy, and I know of a certain someone who is sure to fall for him. *Calling Chocaholic123* You are going to love this Dean…er…Embry. He’s an interesting addition as a bodyguard is normally in the background, and underdeveloped, but footprints358 is building his character nicely.
I already love so many things about this story, I just had to ask the author to a question…
My favorite thing about Edward and Bella is that they represent the dream that all little girls have when they think about their true love. Edward is the knight in shining armor that will fight to the death to protect his love, and Bella is equally as devoted without being lost. She is fiery, feisty, and just as much of a protector as he is. I love that they are equals, and neither is forced to relinquish anything for the sake of the other.
Belward was published on Tuesday, and already six entertaining chapters have posted. Gah! I enjoy each one more than the last – rush to read so you can join me.
Summary: Access Hollywood thinks he’s gay. Extra thinks he’s secretly married. In reality, Hollywood Hot Shot Edward Cullen is just busy. The literary world recognizes M. Dwyer as one of the most prolific writers of this generation. The business world knows Isabella Swan as a philanthropic real estate mogul. What happens when all of this comes crashing together? Canon Couples – Romance/Humor – Rated: M – WIP
Kristina Sanchez has to be one of the most prolific writers in the fandom. With 77 fanfics to her name (under the handle LyricalKris) and three original books published on Amazon, she is a one-woman writing machine.
She’s also good. Really good. So when I was offered an Advanced Reader’s Copy of her latest book, Finding Purgatory, I jumped at the chance.
Finding Purgatory tells the story of Ani Novak, a recently bereaved mother and wife, who goes in search of her long lost-sister, Tori, who she lost touch with after their parents died. The last time Ani saw her, Tori was three, but now she’s eighteen and embittered by the foster system that brought her up.
She’s also extremely angry at Ani for abandoning her when she was a child. With sixteen years between them, she felt that Ani should have taken care of her, so from the start their relationship is strained. Only when Tori discovers she’s pregnant and alone does she finally turn to her sister, seeking some support in a world where she’s perpetually alone.
But things aren’t as simple as they seem. Ani has issues of her own—big issues that involve the death of her husband and adored baby girl. Issues which mean she’s not even sure she can help her sister and the new baby, not when it brings up such painful memories from the past. But the alternative—to abandon her sister once again to a world where she will be alone—seems so much worse.
Finding Purgatory is beautifully written, with characters that are flawed yet very relatable. Even when Ani is struggling with her demons, or Tori is acting up, their motivations and actions are understandable and forgivable. From the start the story is angsty—the first few pages describe the death of Ani’s husband and baby and the aftermath—but as the book continues you can see hope beginning to bloom in a life that seemed bereft of any dreams, and it was that slow change which kept my eyes glued to the page. I found myself rooting for Ani and Tori, hoping that things would finally be okay for them, that they would find something more than the darkness that had haunted their worlds for so long.
The book has a little romance, too. In the form of West McCarty (brother of Tori’s social worker Shane) who delights in introducing Ani to cheesecake and Raphe Diego, the boy who steals Tori’s heart.
This was one of those books that you can’t put down, yet when you come to the end of the story you feel as though you’ve lost some friends. Long after I’d turned off my kindle I was still thinking about the characters. I’d highly recommend it to anybody who can stomach the angst, and enjoys a realistic, gentle yet heartwarming story with a dash of romance.
Thank you to the Fic Sisters for giving me this opportunity to talk about my mini fic, Wicked Games.
It’s no real surprise to anyone who knows me well, that I’m fascinated by the whole concept of angels and demons so the chance to build the Twilight characters into their world, one on either side of the moral divide was too tempting to resist.
This story is told over seven short chapters with two additional outtakes posted, too.
Bella is in Hell, a concubine for the Devil and when she’s not having to service her master she spends her time staring at the untouchable angel who stands on the opposite side of the fiery divide. She thinks he is aloof and beyond her reach…
For so long, decades most likely I’ve watched him with an unwavering eye. Studied his form and cataloged it all. I’ve memorized every line of his carved physique; the angles of his ethereal face, the sharpness of his jaw, his full lips that purse when he is deep in thought and those green eyes which pierce the vast distance between us and make my blackened heart soar. He is perfection. When he turns my way I feel desire flame within me, even if he doesn’t notice me.
I want him. Badly.
I have spent years hoping for a chance to corrupt and bring him to my side, but I can’t have him. He is the gatekeeper to a realm I dare not enter; trusted and true. I know I hold no appeal to his sight. To him I am invisible.
In my fantasies he is insatiable, an eager lover. Worshiping me with his body, his strong hands caressing my flesh, his mouth exploring hot and hungry, urgently taking what he needs from me. Using my body for his pleasure.
But first impressions can be deceptive and Sinerella discovers a secret about the handsome angel and things are forever changed.
Summary: She has watched him for years, he is grace, beauty and goodness and she is a sinner. It isn’t just the river of Hell fires which separates them. Given a chance will Bella corrupt the one pure thing in her life? Supernatural/Fantasy – Rated: M – Angelward & Sinnerella – Complete
The story opens in Manhattan on a hot July afternoon. Bella is apartment hunting as she has recently moved to the city to take a position with Ralph Lauren; she has a degree in fashion under her belt (no pun intended). Yes…you read that correctly – this is Bella – in heels no less! The heavens open and she takes shelter in a small coffee shop by the name of Central Perk. In all the coffee shops, in all the neighborhoods in all New York, she walks into the one where her estranged, childhood friend is lounging.
Alice, said friend, is…wait for it…a chef! It’s as refreshing as a cup of the house coffee to find such a profession role reversal for these two ladies. Don’t laugh at me, but I can’t help wondering if Alice will cook lasagna in a future chapter.
Joking aside, though, what this FicSister is most looking forward to is the rekindling of Bella’s relationship with Edward (a club-owning Professorward, btw). They were very good friends until Bella blew both it and the chance of more. Now nine years later, following an awkward reunion, with friendships at stake, and a girlfriend to complicate matters, will this become their time?
Friends, Lovers and Good Coffee is Minerva77’s way of combining two of her favourite things – Twilight and Friends. Let’s hope these characters become some of your favourites as the story unfolds.
You can never have enough Friends!
Summary: Bella grew up in New Hampshire, along beside the sister/brother duo, Alice and Edward. The three of them were great friends and done everything together… until one evening Edward confessed his feelings for Bella. What should have been a happily ever after considering that Bella felt the same ended badly. Romance/Adventure – Rated: M – Edward & Bella – WIP

Summary: “There’s this new girl in town. I call her Brightside. Emmett likes her, but he says she smells like trees. I think she smells good, like lavender… anyway, I think she’s going to have my baby.” A story about a boy who made a mistake. Or two. AU-AH, short chapters/frequent updates. Rated: M – Romance/Angst – Bella/Edward – WIP
Fan Fic Fi ~ Wild Pitch by bornonhalloween – I’m not usually (like ever!) a slash reader but I LOVED Benched – this prequel is proving to be just as good, love these boys SFM – I’m converted, give them a try!
Summary: Superstar Emmett (“Big Mac”) McCarty is a genius on the mound, but fame forces his true desires deep into the shadows. When a certain fan with a knack for numbers catches Emmett’s attention, life gets a little bit wild. This NON-drabble story is a prequel to “Benched.” M/M Emmett POV. Rated M for major league Edward/Emmett loving. – Romance – WIP
DebbieLove ~ The Trouble by Twilightholic-Tanya: This is one of those stories that will stay with readers for a long while after reading – being a teen isn’t easy and they often make bad choices. I’ve got to admit I cried.
Summary: The trouble with boys like Edward Cullen is I can already see how it will end. But the thrill of driving down this road with him is almost worth the crash. Rated: M – English – Romance/Drama – Bella/Edward – Complete
GeekChic12 ~ Summer’s Hidden Melody by winterhorses: This story pulled me in from the beginning with its vibrant characters. I always love a snarky, confident Bella. It also kept me guessing, which I appreciate in any story. The big twist was well worth the wait!
Summary: One band. Two college graduates. Twenty-four concerts. Bella and Rosalie spend an unforgettable summer following their favorite band on tour. When Bella catches the eye of charismatic lead singer Anthony Cullen, she’s in for an incredible ride. But the two don’t always get along in harmony, and Bella wonders if her long-held ideal really is the perfect one for her. Rated: M – Romance/Drama – Bella/Edward – Complete
Musette Blanchard ~ Metaphysics by anais mark: Words fail me at explaining the beauty of this story. It’s literature at its best, her prose, her vocabulary, her masterplay with time between 17th and 20th centuries, the poetic references, the characters, some familiar Twi (though slightly OOC) and some original ones whose presence only enrich the plot, everything about this story invites you in *yeah, I’m quoting Twi lol*.
Summary: Edward & Bella are graduate students in London ‘coincidentally’ researching the same poets. More than 300 years after the fact, Carlisle & Edward must find out why Carlisle’s past won’t stay there – before Bella digs it up researching her thesis.
Thank you so much to MsRedBoots, Fan Fic Fi, DebbieLove, GeekChic12 and Musette Blanchard – wonderful recommendations, ladies!
