Star Crossed Stories

Hello and huge FicSister hugs to one and all… We’re in a spin, there are so many amazing summer reads; fabulous WiPs, recently completed stories, books being published! Where to begin?

Well, whether the sun is shining for you, you’re watching stunning lightening storms, or there is snow on the horizon for the first time since Edward was a boy (smooches AusFicSister), do yourself a favor… find a comfy spot and find out what some of our fabulous fandom friends are loving… First up…say hello to Lellabeth!

When GeekChic12 came to me and said she wanted me to pre-read for her new fic, I jumped at the chance (with much squealing and capitalised exclamations, of course). When she then said it’d be a birthday fic for Twilly, one of the kindest ladies in the fandom, I was doubly thrilled. When she told me it was a continuation of a flash she’d written for Twilight Twenty-Five Round Eight, I was starting to hear angels singing and see rays of light shining down.

And then I found out Edward was with Kate. (I’d add in my actual reaction word for word, but I don’t think I’m meant to swear).

To say I was wary would be an understatement. I was side-eyeing harder than Jackson Rathbone at his wig fitting for Eclipse. GeekChic12 is capable of so many things – humour, angst, and more smut than you can shake a stick (not that kind!) at. But honestly… Kate?

The first chapter, which is the flash written for TT25, had me shaking my head at the blindness of men – how convenient that Edward’s ex, Kate, would be trying to worm her way in between him and Bella by claiming she desperately needed a place to stay. I was just waiting for that place to conveniently be his lap.

Except the ex isn’t Kate at all.

It’s Bella.

That’s where Geek turns it all upside down.

In a fic-world where we see the name Tanya and wonder when she’ll start trying to seduce Edward, this was a big departure.

I loved it.

Chapter 2 begins with EPOV, one of Geek’s specialities. She taps into the mind of a man so well, starting with the admission he hadn’t found time to tell Kate that Bella and Lily, the daughter he has with Bella, would be coming to stay, and just assumed she’d be okay with it. (A ‘dude, really?’ moment if ever there was one.) Shockingly enough, it transpires that Kate is clearly very not okay with it, and ignores Edward’s attempts to contact her after she storms out.

When I began to read the story, I immediately worried that Bella would be scheming or manipulative, having planned things so she could split Edward and Kate up. Instead, Geek portrays Bella as a woman stuck in a desperately awkward situation. She needs to stay with Edward, for reasons explained later on, but hates that she’s forced Kate out. She’s aware and accepting of Edward’s relationship, though of course she begins to question her feelings as she spends more time with Edward and Lily as a family – something they’ve never done before. Chapter 3 ends on somewhat of a cliffie, and will leave you trying to click a ‘Next Chapter’ button that doesn’t exist. There’s obviously an attraction between Edward and Bella, one that’s both fiercely raging and subtly sneaking between them, but neither will acknowledge it out loud.

I can’t give away what happens next, but chapter 4 is a change of pace from the other 3 before it. We begin to learn more of Kate and Edward’s relationship, and that pesky chemistry sparking between Edward and Bella refuses to be hidden. There are flashbacks to the past that tease just as much as they inform, and all of it pieced together by perfect writing.

All Yours is something special. It leaves you unsure who you should be rooting for, waiting impatiently for more details of the past to be revealed, and makes you desperate for Edward and Bella to just do it already.

If none of that was enough to convince you, there are gems like:

Was he… Could the hottest guy I’ve ever seen in real life have possibly been turned on?

By me?

No. Freaking. Way.”

Which set my fangirl heart to bursting.

The lesson here is to step outside our fic-boundaries once in a while. All Yours might have Kate, but it also has so much more. And I, for one, can’t wait to read it all.

Summary: A summer fling. A surprise pregnancy. A high school sweetheart back home. Life is complicated. Years later, can two co-parents keep old feelings out of the equation when circumstances force them under the same roof? Will they want to? A birthday fic for Twilly. AH.

The movie, Grease, is an old favorite for most of us, in which the greaser boy and the cheerleader girl fall in love and he drives them off toward their HEA.  Those oh-so-cool boys in leather jackets and slicked-back hair were definitely my type, but I never wanted to be Sandy.  I wanted to be Rizzo, with my own leather jacket, cool car, and hot friends. Honeybee Meadows enthusiastically agreed with me about all things greaser boy and leathered girl so, one late night, after much champagne and many cookies, a plot bunny was born.

In her latest fic, Don’t Look/No Promises, Honeybee hands us a brand new Bella – a good girl who just loves to be bad.  Though she’s the police chief’s daughter, she can’t stop herself from stealing cars with her friends, just for a little fun. Once the night’s joyride is over, the girls head home and no one ever seems the wiser. The problem is, the classic T-bird that the trio just nicked belongs to someone who is watching their every move and knows exactly who they are.

Edward Cullen, a prince of temptation in greased and tattooed glory, thinks he’s found exactly the girl he’s been looking for in Bella, the good girl who just might get dirty.

“The innocent ones, the ones who need you to take over and love on them, give them something soft and sweet, they weren’t for him. He wanted a little bit of knowledge.  A little understanding, maybe some confidence, enough to get them upright and demanding. Enough so that they could tell him where to lick and kiss and bite without stuttering, pant harder, faster, don’t stop, don’t stop, fuck me, don’t stop instead of the virginal silent treatment.”

Now I could go on and on here about the off-the-chart UST and the ohmygod lemons, and this fic would be worth reading just for that. Go ahead, enjoy! But, Honeybee’s story has so much more.  There are inner demons to fight, as Edward mourns the loss of both his brothers, and social evils to battle, as the prejudice and ignorance of the time period threatens the well-being of friends. Honeybee Meadows has created a timeless story about finding love and acceptance in the most unexpected of places.

The land of fan fiction is filled with romance. Edward meets Bella and there are instant sparks. The hero and heroine give each other looks of love and fall into each others arms with whispered words of adoration.

That is not this story.

Instead, Cruiz107 created a tale that is more intense, moving and enriching then a simple meet cute. Bella’s story is one of survival and overcoming a tragedy that shaped her into a person that she didn’t want to be. Bella Swan in Make or Break Me is rough around the edges, but when you read about her experiences it makes so many things clear.

While my body entered Riga Mortis, no one would know that my name was Bella and I dreamed of being a famous artist one day. I would be just one less person on line at the soup kitchen and shelter.

Is Edward her knight in shining armor? Not quite. The love between them does not come instantly or easily. Many times, the relationship between two people needs to grow from something small like a seed planted in a garden. Bella and Edward began their acquaintance in the most unfriendly way. He didn’t trust her and she didn’t trust herself. The journey to the two of them connecting is one of the strongest parts of the story. It isn’t easy, but the endgame is more fulfilling because of it.

My feelings for Edward were weird at best. I would say it was a love/hate relationship because I felt neither of those things for him. As many times as he insulted me in one form or another, I could never hate him. He had a complicated personality one that I haven’t figured out yet.

Cruiz107 has a way of showing the realistic way that people behave. It’s the picture of the world around us that we try to avoid seeing, sometimes gritty and explicit, but really do need to take a closer look to see the injustices surrounding us.

I warn you, it isn’t going to be an easy read. If you decide to take the leap, Make or Break Me will stick with you and that’s a wonderful thing.

Summary: Bella, homeless and in need, collides into a man that can’t be bothered with her. Is he the one who’s going to pick her up or leave her in despair? WARNING: SOME SCENES MAY BE TOO GRAPHIC FOR SOME! READ W/ CAUTION. Angst/Drama Rated M  Bella/Edward Complete

If you’ve been around the fandom for a while, you’ll be aware of Lolo84. The Good Luck Club was one of my favourite reads last year, telling the story of a Bella who works in a strip club, and a certain… client who comes to purchase her services.

So you can imagine how pleased I was to hear that Lolo, under her pen name Lore Ree, has written an original novella which was published earlier this month.

Ricochet is told from the point of view of Miles Bedford; a cocky, sexy guy whose girlfriend, Arianna, is slightly insecure. When his best friend, Warren drags him to Las Vegas to celebrate their birthdays, it causes nothing but trouble.

Finding a photo of her boyfriend surrounded by women, Arianna goes crazy, breaking off their relationship and leaving Miles bereft. That’s when Warren hits on his big idea—using ‘the Rebound Effect’ to help Miles get over his break up, believing that the best way to get over one girl is to get under another.

Enter Noelle, Miles’ ‘ricochet’ girl, who turns out to be anything but.

This story was funny and sexy. Definitely an 18+ novel, it kept me glued to the page right until the end. I fell in love with Miles and his friends and found myself rooting for a happy ending for them all.

At 99c and 114 pages, Ricochet is a long novella, perfect for a summer read. Sweet and romantic, and on the right side of sarcastic, it kept a smile on my face long after I finished reading it.

Can you tell us who made this?
Can you tell us who made this?

New to us author, poppyandpeony, is really tugging at the heart strings with a lonely Miss Swan teaching the high school class that doesn’t want to learn. Especially when the class is American Lit.

She is watched over by a leering, creepy Mike Newton who’s constantly being overly helpful -ick, ick, ick…he’s such a slime-ball- before going home to her empty house every night.

It’s easy to feel her despair as her story begins, but as it unfolds, you realise it’s truly a heartwarming tale. Witnessing mouthy teens find respect and grudging interest in her subject is a joy. But seeing her new pupil very slowly begin to heal, under the protective care of his brother…heart melting.

You’ll fall in love with Edward. Actually, you’ll love this Bella too. They’re good people.

We asked poppyandpeony what inspired her: “I started thinking about this story not long after my own father’s death, and I think that’s also why I kept it to myself for so long. For me, this story combines all the things I initially loved about Twilight: loyalty and love and becoming the best parts of who you already are.”

We agree with her completely! Join us on the journey with this lovely WiP, it holds so much promise, we can’t wait to see where it goes.

Summary: Sylvia Plath said “If you expect nothing from anybody, you’re never disappointed.” Bella Swan would have to agree. Then again, she hasn’t met Edward Cullen…yet. A wit-fit. Rated M for later chapters. Rated M – Romance/Angst – Bella/Edward WiP

In her opening author note, tufano79 says her new story, Star Crossed, is something completely different – she got that right!

Summary: She was the leader of her people.

He was a gruff, by-the-book star ship captain.

An interstellar war, negotiations for a peace treaty gone wrong and a taboo relationship between two species.

Captain Edward Cullen was in charge of the starship, Volvo. He, along with his crew, were given a mission to deliver Empress Nirabelle of the Cygnarian people to the nearby planet of Lapus, to negotiate a treaty between their two worlds. For over a millennia, they have been fighting a vicious battle. For what? They don’t even know. It’s ingrained in their minds and their history.

The Empress is to meet with the Crown Prince of Lapus, Jakob. The Volvo is transporting her and her envoy, Maralice to the planet. There are strict rules in place for the Empress’s transport. She is to not have any contact with any males on the ship, per the cultural norms of Cygnarian society. The trip should take as little time as possible and if no headway has been made within one day of being in orbit, Captain Cullen is to transport the Empress from the planet’s surface.

However, something goes terribly wrong on Lapus. One communication to the Volvo and a brief face-to-face conversation forever changes the future of the Empress and Captain Cullen.

Will they survive this threat or are the Star Crossed lovers doomed before they even have a chance?

The story is a fascinating formula of Twilight characters, a Star Trek style space setting, and our favourite star crossed lovers adding a tiny hint of Shakespearian drama. You may consider it highly illogical for this combination to work, but somehow, the unique yet familiar characters -including a widowed alien Alice, and an embittered human Jasper – make it so. As for the connection between the impressive, regal Bella and the loyal, born-to-be leader Edward, it’s instant and deep. Their situation appears impossible, but as in the best of love stories…resistance is futile…and in this case, it’s deadly.

So, if you’ve haven’t read anything like this before, your mission is to to explore this strange new world, to seek out new character life and civilisations, to boldly go where no man has you’ve never gone before. :)

I started writing Diary of an Ugly Girl fresh out of high school after I’d moved from Estonia to Canada (alone). I was nineteen. I’d read a snippet in a magazine written by a girl who found herself sitting around a table in a bar, surrounded by girls making fun of another whose features didn’t match theirs. Their object of ridicule, either unaware of those comments or purposefully ignoring them, sat by a remarkably handsome man who didn’t hide his affection for the so-called plain girl. This not only puzzled but annoyed the women around this table whose remarks became cattier when the man left to use the bathroom.

The girl who shared a table with the others but had listened in silence stood up, walked over to the bar counter and introduced herself. The plain girl became the most fascinating person she’d ever met. Plot twist? I didn’t read it in a magazine.

But it wasn’t just that. The idea of this protagonist grew on me during my teenage years. I’d developed a dislike for too many female characters who expected and dreamed of a man who would fix them, or their self-esteem, or any of their issues, really. Two compliments later, bam! She’s fixed! Marriage! Kids! What do you, as a teenager, learn from a story where the female character’s only virtue is her appearance?

I intended for the story to be around 50k words and 12 chapters.

So, that didn’t happen.

For those who’ve never read Diary, it’s a story of a teenage girl who, after having been abused and bullied in middle school, (successfully) changes her attitude in high school to avoid the same fate. She’s sarcastic, random and is (and appears) self-confident to others, despite her self-esteem issues. It’s a character-driven and a somewhat unusual journey of self-discovery and growth, explored through the protagonist’s eyes whose perspective changes over time. I finished it two weeks after my graduation from a university and it’s meant the world to me through my college years. Flaws and all.

Perhaps the most important technical aspect of this story is its point of view. Outside of Bella’s Diary, there are stories untold; for example, it downplays Jasper’s role as her brother’s best friend because Jasper asked her not to write about him in detail. Her perspective is limiting, and purposefully so.

An aspect of this story, including its characters, themes and familial relationships, has been shaped by the person I am (probably more so than I care to admit). Most notable, perhaps, is Bella’s sense of humour and relationship with her father and brother, especially the way she learns to see how much they care and in which ways, exactly, they show it. I always felt my father wanted to have seven sons (he has six sons—and me), so I remember the exact moment I found out he was proud of me. I probably knew, but I didn’t feel it, and feeling it made all the difference in the world.

I could write a chapter filled with 20k words about how this story came to be, but I’m afraid to cause death by boredom.

I hope you enjoy Bella’s journey and maybe see some things in a way you hadn’t thought of before.

Mav (Anton M.)

Summary: Follow Bella as she grows from a bullied little girl into a sassy young woman. After all, it’s not about what you’re looking at, it’s about what you see. An unorthodox story about best friends and their journey. Humor/Angst/Friendship/Romance. AH. Bella/Edward Complete.
